I had never heard of the idea of Web 2.0 but after hearing Dr. Tyso explain its use I like the idea. I especially like the four point he concentrated on; meaningfulness, significance, connectedness and contribution. As I have suggested in previous posts I like the idea of making students responsible for their own ideas and work. I think this leads students to be more involved in their work, more excited about their work and more rewarded by their work. These are the ideas that I think Dr. Tyson was trying to get across in his speech.
The idea of contribution hit home for me the most. I believe that all children want to make some sort of contribution to their community, country and/or world. By allowing them to work on a project, such as these movies then you are allowing them to reach out to the world and make their mark. The thing that pleasantly surprised me was how well these movies were done. Dr. Tyson allowed these students to connect to a topic that interested them by contributing to society. A project like this also allows students voices be heard and show the students that their voice matters.
Tyson proceeded with the assumption that students will care if you expect them to and allow them opportunities for expression…
